First group week - Success!!

What a wonderful week of groups! I hope you enjoy the videos from the beginner and advanced groups. We really had fun learning with the Rhythm Cups!

A couple things I wanted to point out. There is a HUGE correlation between each student’s ability to learn, play and understand music and the amount of time they spend on music theory. All students should have new Theory books, and I am going to give them enough assignments that they could spend 5 minutes on theory each practice day (assuming 5 days of practice per week). They MUST bring their Theory books to their lessons, and if their assignments are not completed, we will spend time during their lessons finishing their assignments, which leaves very little time to work on pieces. PLEASE encourage your student to complete their Theory assignments every week.

Also, the Musictheory.net exercises have been paying off for the students who are doing them. They have a much deeper understanding of aspects of music theory because of their repeated use of these exercises. If you need any help with settings, please let me know and I can send you those settings I would choose. There are exercises for all levels of students. My suggested order for use of these exercises:

  1. Keyboard Note Identification

  2. Note Identification

  3. Note Construction

  4. Keyboard Reverse Identification

  5. Interval Identification

  6. Interval Construction

  7. Key Signature Identification

  8. Key Signature Construction

  9. Chord Identification

  10. Chord Construction

  11. Scale Identification

  12. Scale Construction
